Research Essay
Use the following to help guide you through writing a good research essay. All due dates can be found on the calendar. Here is the assignment handout:
Below is a link to the TDSB and Toronto Public libraries where you can find academic sources.
Below is a PowerPoint slideshow that shows you how to create embedded citations (not needed until Process #3 which is the final submission of the essay) and how to create a proper Reference List in APA Format (which is needed for Process #1).
Process #1
Below is the document for Task #1. Read all the instructions carefully. Do not get creative with the format. I have also attached a note-taking sheet. If you don't wish to include personal responses in the right column, remove it and increase the space for your notes all the way to the right margin. I have also included your rubric.
Process #2
Below is a document that will help you transition from Process 1 to Process 2. You do not need to hand this in or show it to me. Of course, if you have any questions, you should ask me. This document is just there to help you make sure that you have fixed any errors from Process 1 so that they don't impact Process 2.
Below is the document for completing Process #2. Please use it as a template. It would be best if you saved a copy for yourself and started filling in the fields beside the subheadings. You may submit this as a Google Doc if you want to save paper. Make sure I have editing access!!!
Process #3: The Final Submission:
Below, you will find supporting documents to help you finish the final product. By reviewing these, you will also have a more clear understanding of what I expect from your writing.
The first step is to fix your Process #2 before doing anything else. If there is anything you do not understand about my feedback, it's imperative that you ask. I will be happy to explain.
It is also important at this stage to go back to the original assignment handout above to remind yourself of some of the details. You do not need a cover page. You can give your essay a title, make sure your name is on every page, and print double sided.
You should submit your good copy of your essay to Turnitin.com by midnight on the due date. The Class ID is 24169306 and the Enrollment Key is Gourley.

It is no longer enough to simply "list" your research in sentences when writing a research essay/assignment. What you need to do is think of your research as something that supports your ideas, not replace them. The slides below go through some things that I will be looking for in your essay:
The first handout here is a general guideline for writing introductory and conclusion paragraphs. The second document provides 5 different introductory paragraphs, all using different tones and hooks for the reader. All finish with the thesis statement. You will want to pay attention to what tone is appropriate for your essay topic.
Each of your body paragraphs should have 2 distinct points which support the point/argument in your topic sentence. Transitional words alert your audience that you are bringing up a new point within a paragraph. I challenge you to move beyond "first, secondly, thirdly" and try out other words. The handout also gives you an idea about when to use these words.
Remember to also consider the main methods of development when writing. They are effective tools to being persuasive and to fully explaining your ideas or arguments.

Use the following to make sure that you have been able to take care of the finer details of essay writing. Even though the first document is called a "peer editing sheet", it can be useful for you to try it out on your own essay. The proofreading and editing sheet provides a list of "to do's" and "you really shouldn'ts". There is also some information to consider before handing in your final essay.
